Introduction to Links

Use the optional Links field to enter URLs of websites that are related to the Lesson Plan item or Assignment you are creating. You will enter a URL and a caption for each Link entry. You can copy the Links from an existing Assignment to other Assignments or from an existing Lesson Plan item to other Lesson Plan items using the Multi-Edit feature.

In an Assignment or Lesson Plan Add/Edit window, each URL will be listed in the Links field.

In the Agenda - List View and Lesson Plan page, the Links column will show the number of URLs on the list.

Enabling the Links Field

The Links field is optional and can be enabled and disabled using the Customize link in the HSTOnline menu bar.

Disabling this field will:

  • Remove the Links field from the Assignment and Lesson Plan add/edit windows
  • Remove the Links column from the Agenda - List View and Lesson Plan pages
  1. On the HSTOnline menu, click or touch Program Options.
  2. On the Program Options page, click or touch the Optional Fields tab.
  3. Click or touch the box next to Links to add a checkmark to enable the field; or to remove a checkmark to disable the field.
  4. Click or touch Save to keep your changes.
  5. Click or touch 'Ok' on the 'Changes Saved' window.

Displaying the Links Column

When the Links field is enabled, you can choose whether to display or hide the column in the Agenda - List View and/or Lesson Plan pages.

In the Agenda - List View or Lesson Plan page:

  1. Click or touch the Options button.
  2. Click or touch 'Choose Columns' to open the Choose Columns window.
  3. Click or touch the checkbox next to Links to add a checkmark to display the column; or to remove a checkmark to hide the column.
  4. Choose to display or hide any other columns as needed.
  5. Click or touch:
    • Cancel to close the Choose Columns window without making any changes to your column display.
    • Save Changes to reset the displayed columns according to your selections.

Adding Links

  • When Links are added to a Lesson Plan item, they will also be added to any Assignments created from that Lesson Plan item.
  • When Links are added to an Assignment, they will also be added to any additional Assignments created with the Copy or Duplicate features using the original Assignment as a starting point.

  1. In the Assignment or Lesson Plan add or edit windows, click or touch the word Links, or the pencil icon to the right of it, to open the Links window.

  2. Click or touch the 'Add new record' button.

  3. Click or touch into the URL field and enter the web address. You can copy/paste into this field if needed. HSTOnline will automatically add the 'http://' if you leave it off.
  4. Click or touch into the Caption field and enter up to 150 characters. This is the text that will appear in the Assignment or Lesson Plan add/edit window under Links.
  5. Repeat steps 2-4 until all your Links for this item have been entered.

    • To change an entry you have already made:
      • Click or touch into the URL or Caption field for the item to be changed and make whatever changes are required.
    • To remove an entry you have already made:
      • Click or touch the Delete button to the right of the line item.
  6. Click or touch:
    • Cancel to return to the add/edit window without changing the original Links field on that form.
    • Save to save the entries you have made and return to the add/edit form you were working on.
  7. If you have added one or more Links, they will be listed on the add/edit form in alphabetical order by Caption. Each caption is a hyperlink. Click or touch the link to go to that site which will open in a new tab or a new window depending on your browser settings.
  8. In Agenda - List View or Lesson Plan pages, the Links column will show the number of distinct URLs attached to the Assignment or Lesson Plan item.

Editing Links for a Lesson Plan item or Assignment

Editing Links for a Single Lesson Plan item or Assignment

  1. Open the edit window for the Assignment or Lesson Plan item you want to work with.
  2. Click or touch the word Links, or the pencil icon to the right of it, to open the Links window.

    • To add one or more new Links, click or touch the 'Add new record' button and enter the new URL and Caption.
    • To change an existing Link, click or touch into the URL or Caption field for the item and make whatever changes are required.
    • To delete an existing Link, click the Delete button for that row.
  3. Click or touch:
    • Cancel to return to the add/edit window without changing the Links.
    • Save to save the changes you have made and return to the add/edit form you were working on.

Editing Links for Multiple Lesson Plan items or Assignments

Use this option to edit the Links for multiple Assignments or multiple Lesson Plan items at one time. All selected items will have the same list of Links at the end of the edit process.

  1. Open the multi-edit window for the Assignment or Lesson Plan item you want to work with.
  2. In the multi-edit window, click or touch the box to the left of Links to enable that field. The Links tied to the first selected item will be displayed.

  3. Click or touch the pencil icon to open the Links window.

    • To add one or more new Links, click or touch the 'Add new record' button and enter the new URL and Caption.
    • To change an existing Link, click or touch into the URL or Caption field for the item and make whatever changes are required.
    • To delete an existing Link, click the Delete button for that row.
  4. Click or touch:
    • Cancel to return to the multi-edit window without changing the Links.
    • Save to save the entries you have made and return to the multi-edit form you were working on.
  5. Make any other changes needed in the multi-edit Assignments or Lesson Plan items window.
  6. On the multi-edit window, click or touch:
    • Cancel to abandon all changes.
    • Save to
  7. Existing Links of the selected Lesson Plan items or Assignments will be replaced by the new list of Links you created.

Deleting Links

  1. Open the edit or multi-edit window for the Assignment(s) or Lesson Plan item(s) you want to work with.
  2. Open the Links field:
    • In an edit window, click or touch the word Links, or the pencil icon to the right of it, to open the Links window.
    • In a multi-edit window, click or touch the box to the left of Links to enable that field. The Links tied to the first selected item will be displayed. Click or touch the pencil icon to open the Links window.

  3. Click the Delete button next to each Link you want to remove.
  4. Click or touch:
    • Cancel to return to the edit or multi-edit window without changing the Links.
    • Save to save the changes you have made and return to the edit or multi-edit form you were working on.
