Selecting Multiple Items in a List
Introduction
Click-and-Drag and Shift-Click are methods for selecting multiple contiguous items in a grid when you want to Multi-Edit or Delete those items, or for selecting items for any Action that can be performed on
two or more items at a time.
If you use the filters on the page you are working with and/or the Search box to limit the items you are viewing, you might find it easiest to simply use the 'Select All' badge at the top of the page to
select all items in view. However, even with filters, grouping, sorting and searching, there may be times that you only want to work with parts of a group of items. The Click-and-Drag selection and Shift-Click
selection options give you a way to quickly highlight multiple items and then perform an Action upon those items.
Click-and-Drag Selection
- Place your mouse over the first item you wish to highlight.
- Press the left mouse button and drag the mouse over the list. A gray window will appear over your selection.
- When the gray window covers all items, release the mouse button.
- You can select multiple groupings of items on the same page.
- Follow steps #1-3 above.
- Press the ctrl key on your keyboard and repeat steps #1-3 over the next group of items
- Repeat as needed. Holding the ctrl-key while clicking and dragging will retain previous selections and add new ones to the selection as well.
- You can now click the Action button and choose Multi-Edit, Delete or any other action that allows you to preform actions on two or more selected items at once.
Shift-Click Selection
- Click the first item you wish to highlight.
- Scroll, if necessary, so that you can see the last item you wish to highlight.
- Press and hold the Shift key.
- Click anywhere except in the checkbox for the last record to be included. All the records between the first you chose to the last will be highlighted.
- Release the Shift key. The items you clicked on and each item in between will be highlighted.
- You can add additional single items to the selection by pressing and holding the Ctrl key while you click on each item to be included. Again, click anywhere except the checkbox to retain all of
your selections.
- You can now click the Action button and choose Multi-Edit, Delete or any other action that allows you to preform actions on two or more selected items at once.
A Word about Ctrl-Click
It is always fastest to make multiple selections by using the filters, grouping, sorting and searching options to isolate the items you want to work with. However, there may be times when you just want
to select a few items out of a much longer list. When this is the case, holding the Ctrl key down while clicking on each item (anywhere but the checkbox) will insure that you add each new item without
accidentally de-selecting any of the previous items.
